Project Description:
THE OVERALL SCOPE FOR THE CEILING REPLACEMENT IS INTENDED TO ADDRESS AN ONGOING CONCERN WITH THE EXISTING SUSPENDED ACOUSTICAL CEILING SYSTEM. THE EXISTING SYSTEM CONSISTS OF A SUSPENDED METAL GRID SUPPORTING HEAVY TECTUM CEILING BOARDS, AND BATT INSULATION LAYING ON TOP OF THE BOARDS, AS WELL AS 2'X4' LAY-IN T12 FLUORESCENT LIGHTING FIXTURES ALSO SUPPORTED IN THE CEILING GRID. THE BOARDS HAVE BEGUN TO FALL FROM THE GRID WHEN IMPACTED BY A GAME BALL DURING PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES. DUE TO THE HEAVY WEIGHT OF THE BOARDS, THERE ARE SAFETY CONCERNS WITH LEAVING THE CEILING SYSTEM IN PLACE.
 
THE INTENT FOR THE NEW CEILING DESIGN IS TO COMPLETELY DEMOLISH THE EXISTING SUSPENDED CEILING GRID AND TECTUM BOARD SYSTEM AND TRANSITION THE SPACE TO A MORE TRADITIONAL EXPOSED PAINTED STRUCTURE APPEARANCE, COMMON TO MANY SCHOOL GYMNASIUMS. THE EXISTING ROOF DESIGN IS A STEEP SLOPED GABLE TYPE ROOF WITH WOOD JOIST FRAMING SUPPORTED BY LARGE STRUCTURAL STEEL TRUSSES. AFTER THE SUSPENDED CEILING IS DEMOLISHED, THE TRUSSES, THE WOOD JOISTS AND THE GABLE END WALLS WILL ALL BE EXPOSED. THE GABLE WALLS EACH CONTAIN TWO EXISTING ATTIC VENTS THAT WILL BE INFILLED WITH MATCHING CMU AND EIFS WALL CONSTRUCTION. THE AREA OF THE NEWLY EXPOSED CMU GABLE ENDS WALLS WILL BE PAINTED ON THE INTERIOR SIDE. THE NEWLY EXPOSED WOOD JOISTS WILL BE INFILLED IN BETWEEN WITH NEW BATT INSULATION OF DEPTH TO MATCH THE JOISTS, AND THE ENTIRETY OF THE JOISTS AND INSULATION WILL BE SHEATHED WITH A CONTINUOUS WALL COVERING AND PAINTED. IN ORDER TO MINIMIZE ACOUSTICAL ECHO, THE NEW INTERIOR WALL COVER SHEATHING WILL BE AN ACOUSTICAL PRODUCT PROVIDING SOUND ABSORPTION. THE NEWLY EXPOSED STRUCTURAL STEEL ROOF TRUSSES WILL BE PAINTED AS WELL.
 
THE EXISTING SUSPENDED BASKETBALL NETS AND SPEAKERS ARE CURRENTLY HUNG FROM THE EXISTING STEEL TRUSSES AND CAN REMAIN IN PLACE WITH THE NEW CEILING DESIGN. NEW LIGHTING SHALL BE PENDANT-STYLE MOUNTED LED FIXTURES MOST LIKELY SUSPENDED FROM THE EXISTING STEEL TRUSSES.
